This document lists my general expectations for class participation, conduct, and effort.

For Novice Political Scientists
Many undergraduate and graduate students find the initial introduction to rigorous political science a shock.  Among the most difficult challenges are learning how to draw upon history and quantitative evidence to critically evaluate theory.  Below are guides to help novice learners navigate these challenges.
  • Advice on reading and evaluating theoretical arguments in political science.
  • Advice on reading history pieces in political science.
  • An introduction to regression analysis.

Citation Guidelines
  • I increasingly find that students are unclear about the rules and especially reasons for citation.  This document addresses these issues.  My approach, in short, is to recognize that original thinking is difficult and arrived at only after substantial time and effort.  Consequently, I assume that any points made in a paper are NOT the student's original ideas.  Citation is essential for professors to distinguish between original and unoriginal ideas, rewarding students for their creative efforts and insights.
